Ghana is producing more female entrepreneurs than any other countr

The rise of women in entrepreneurship is not necessarily associated with the pace of their country’s wealth and economic development as this latest Index on women’s entrepreneurship has shown. The second edition of Mastercard Index of Women’s Entrepreneurship (MIWE) revealed that some of the least wealthy and developed economies have higher women business ownership rates than their wealthier developed peers.

Ghanaian entrepreneur finds success by growing and selling coconuts

Adowarim Lugu-zuri, CEO of Wazuri Ghana Limited, sees untapped opportunity in Ghana’s coconut industry.

How did this all start?

For most young students being at university is the ideal time to enjoy your life, lounge around with friends, watch movies and socialise. Some would argue that this time in your life is the most appropriate for some self-indulgence. Not for Adowarim Lugu-zuri. A self-starter, ambitious 24-year-old Ghanaian woman, she remembers the day when the entrepreneur in her was forced into action… out of boredom. “I realised my life was boring and empty because my routine was simply to go train and play basketball, watch movies, eat and sleep,” she says. “And attend lectures, of which most times I wasn’t going. Ghana: 'Most Business-Friendly' Investment Destination Is Our Goal – Trade & Industry's Kyerematen

Ghana received welcome news last week from the IMF: real GDP growth for the country is projected to reach5.9 percent in 2017 and 8.9 percent in 2018, following three successive years when the increase was four percent or less. This is but one of several indicators of economic recovery, according to Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the Minister of Trade & Industry. Kyerematen was appointed to the post in January by President Nana Akufo-Addo following his election in December 2016. He says, in this interview, that growth is essential for stability – but it must be “inclusive” and “bring everybody along”.

Kyerematen, who competed against Akufo-Addo for the nomination of the New Patriotic Party, is an economist and lawyer who served previously as trade minister and as Ghana’s ambassador in Washington, DC. In 2013, he was Africa’s consensus candidate for the position of Director General of the World Trade Organization.
